The Arabs had their own imperial ambitions. It was not just some reaction to Roman decline. Just like how Russia's actions are not about propping up a "based" alternative to Western decay, they are about maintaining sovereignty in the face of encroachment. The West’s decadence is relevant because it is part of why it is failing strategically, but Russia is not positioning itself as some ideological counterweight. It is acting pragmatically in its own interests.
