From what I've observed, this tends to be true in teenage girls who are afraid of men's strength and heterosexual dynamics so they watch pornography or read erotica with unrealistically soft men either voyeuristically or to self-insert as the softer one. Adult women like masculine men more to be a protector for them. How can you explain hybristophilia (attraction to dangerous men) if women are supposedly more attracted to femininity? I see hybristophilia as an extension of adult women's attraction to this, they think "If he's so strong that he can kill someone, maybe I can tame him to be my protector."
This is also true for women taking birth control. I'm not sure of the connection but I'm sure someone can make it.

I heard about this in relation to evolutionary psychology. It's related to female hypergamy where the women who would select the top mate would also select each other to ease tensions with the man instead of competing for him and causing trouble for him, thus allowing him to conquer and progress humanity.
