There are scattered reports and claims, but nothing definitive. Operation Highjump in 1946-47 is often referred to as the time the U.S. tried to “investigate” Antarctica, led by Admiral Byrd with a massive military presence. The official explanation was a training mission and testing equipment for cold climates, but why send such a large task force? Byrd himself later made cryptic statements about threats from the poles.
