Besides, in Sonic the speed mechanic is useless because you’re constantly stopping to do precise jumps, waiting for environmental hazards, or running into objects.

This only apply to sonic 1

Mario has little of this and you can just run through the level uninterrupted if you’re skilled enough.

I’d say it’s the worst in that game. Still, all 2D Sonics require a bit of time to gain momentum for jumps. And it’s not as precise to land on platform’s because Sonic stays up in the air a lot longer than Mario does.
