Are they ineffective even with simply containing a disease to one sickly individual? I feel like they would have some effect in that case, since, in theory, the cloth would block some of the contaminated air that comes from a person's lungs and out of their mouth whenever they cough.
Your nose and lungs are created to be filters.. by wearing a mask you are making a rebreather that literally holds moisture and bacteria. Real science proves they cause pneumonia.. you're essentially breathing dirty air after about 30 seconds of wearing one. Imagine breathing through a clogged air filter.. same shit.
