Almost every JRPG boils down to over leveling two or three of your guys and spamming the most OP spell to win. Meanwhile I threw together an hour long game within a few months and had people telling me how engaging the battle system is. A rare praise for an JRPG.

There's a reason why pretty much all jrpgs done after 2000 all have waifus, especially mmos and gachas. No one would ever play those without goon materials.

Having all your moves be useful from beginning to end, and good synergy between your party members. Paper Mario did this best.

JRPGs are the most barebones application of the RPG formula, its much better when its elements are appropriated into another game. Leveling and skill trees are RPG elements that can work in games of any genre, I feel like gaming has moved past the need for JRPGs because their elements have been consumed into the larger industry and when what's special about them isn't really too special what's left for it? Just the plot and that's usually ass.

I don’t mean to sound like a Nintendo shill but all of the Mario RPGS are how all JRPGs should be like. You’re always interacting with the enemy whether you’re attacking or defending and it’s way more engaging than watching static images and drop-down texts.

The Mario and Luigi series are the best pure RPGs I've ever played, if you're good enough you'll never take damage once and I feel like that's how it should be. Your skill is rewarded greatly but if you're anus you're gonna die in 2-3 turns, those games also have a very good system for their special moves that's also based on your skill.
