I am probably exaggerating although I need help understanding this phenomenon that takes up all the free time of half the single men under 40 years old.

Well for me Anime is like any other media. I mostly watch animes for their worldbuilding lore(that's why Naruto and AOT are on my top list despite both of these being considered normie trash by serious weebs). I dropped off Naruto after it went from being about Ninja Geopolitics to fighting fucking aliens. AOT ending was the literal definition of trash. I could never see myself seeing blatantly self inserted lame shit like Solo levelling or any isekai anime lol.
