I still play on consoles, although most of mine are modded to death, and the ones which aren't modded, will get modded whenever the mods are made available. If you pirate everything then it is rather cheap, same for if you and your frens have a ton of games already. If one fren buys a game, I can dump the game onto my consoles and just play for free without doing the account BS normally required whenever game-share is permitted at all, so that is nice.
How is the homebrew scene? How do the prices really compare to steam, if I'm on full copium?
It depends.
Pre-Switch homebrew scenes are amazing for Nintendo consoles. They're hacked to death, have their own online server replacements, etc. Wii Us are extremely easy to mod, and good for such too. I modded my Wii U of 10 years a long while back, it is very nice.
For Xbox consoles, it isn't as strong. Original Xbox is pretty easy to do, but Xbox 360 mods are significantly more risky to do. If you mod an Xbox 360, I would recommend using a different gamertag or not connecting online at all. There might be a way to use your main gamertag online without getting screwed, but it isn't worth it odds are. Regardless, there's quite a lot for Xbox 360 you can use. Skipping ahead to the Xbox Series X, you just pay $20 for dev-mode and then while you're running things in dev-mode, you can load emulators and other things of that sort. Weirdly, you can play Xbox 360 games via special emulators, not all of them but it is strange seeing titles that are not supported officially work through these unofficial emulators.
I am less sure about Playstation. I don't own a PS3, and I haven't ever modded a PS2. PS5 doesn't seemingly have many, if any mods, nor a dev-mode system like Xbox Series X. PS4 is moddable for versions 11.00 and below. Although, I am unsure how good of an idea it is to mod a PS4 for most, thus you'd probably be better off with an alternative. I have a 7.02 or 7.52 version PS4 sitting around, so I can use that for mods if I want to, but I haven't decided to do so as of now. If I do so, I will probably post the results.
There's also the option of just getting a Steam Deck and modding it to death, pirating everything as per usual.
