I wouldn't say it's a waste because love in these years can be a very happy time, but, yeah, as you've said, a split, whether it be from a source of division in the couple or some outside influence, is very likely after just a few months of being with one another, from what I myself have recently discovered. In addition, if you start to emotionally depend on such things too much then for a little while you just feel really crappy once it's all over.
