Music/Television Old pokemon had a unique flair which the series lost over time.

Talking about the anime here, but it's the same for the games.
The first series had this flair that the pokemon were unique creatures that existed in this world. It wasn't clear if humans came to the pokemon world or pokemon came to the human world. There was a strange sci-fi/dystopian/magical realism feel to it. And it felt like all the trainers were privileged rich kids.

There was that gym with the raichu which had a military guy as the gym leader, which gave the impression of a longer history. The original japanese is much more interesting because he speaks in english from every now and then. Which adds to the military lore and gives the impression that the world is much larger than it is. There's the clefairy-alien story, the huge animatronic theme park which I believe is run by giovani, again creating the impression that team rocket does more than just steal pokemon. Team Rocket isn't even the only bad guy. There was that lady obaba who was creating a sea resort and harming the water pokemon.

But after they realized that this shit was gonna go everywhere, they sterilized it a lot. Got rid of all the real animals. They stopped expanding the lore. Ash is now immortal.Nobody ages. They introduced other groups like team magma. idk if team magma appears in the show aside from that one jerachi movie.

Then they gave an origin story with mew and arceus, which ruined the vibe. That original rock carving of mew in the first movie gives the impression the humans evolved in this world alongside pokemon. The teach in the world was cyberpunk af.

Ofc, pokemon adventures actually keeps with this aesthetic. So at least we'll have that.

old pokemon was fun because it was one of the first games with multiplayer. we used to play gameboy on the bus / in school and connect the cable and battle eachothers pokemon. so you spend the day grinding and then battle your bros on the bus..

we played red and blue pokemon on the gameboy...

Before I knew what anime was, I read the original Pokemon manga, where Pokemon were getting sliced and beheaded. I was shocked to see the anime was heavily neutered in comparison.

Even the old games were “darker” in it’s aesthetics and themes compared to the new ones.

Ken Sugimori had a great artstyle that really typified Pokemon before gen 5. I like gen 5 a lot but it's at this point where it started losing its aesthetic and feeling more generic.

Modern Pokemon sucks because the Pokemon are no longer monsters, but "characters" to be anthropomorphized. This is why the amount of furry-esque pokemon is increasing every generation especially among starters. It also sucks because the games are just more generally cheap and less effort is put into them, but everyone knows that.

Pokemon also before BW had a sort of charming "Old Japan" element because of its Shinto and Shamanic inspirations. They tried to bring this back in Arceus but it felt extremely forced. what you see in G/S/HG/SS is much more natural and authentic, it is purely the result of a Japan that was more in touch with local mythologies and less globalized, even though the names of various Pokemon in Japanese do have a Greek or Latin element.

Some of the Pokemon Mangas were really mature. Pokemon getting sliced in half, jokes about Pokeballs as boobs, and there was this one Japanese one that was very lewd with how it treated Misty. Even though she's canonically like 12. And yeah, there is plenty of sort of oddly dark pokedex entries and subplots. The oldest two generations had asshole rivals who you were sort of encouraged to hate, and up until Gen 7 there were serious evil teams.

i do remember there being a page that was straight up a nude female character but i don't remember which, i saw it as a meme or an ifunny page ages ago kek
this is true, japan overall used to be really realistic and crude with their teenage entertainment but they exchanged it to something more soft

Japan has always been the prime example of globalism working without destroying the the natural ecology of a country.
The problem with globalism in the third world and elsewhere is that it's just a way for shitskins to feel more white.
