I've always wondered what he specifically thought of it to have it hung up there, keeping in mind his "Cosmotheism"; a zealously anti-Christian, spiritual, evolutionist philosophy. I'm sure the obvious mendacity of the poster's original intention, as you've identified, formed a part of his intrigue with it, but perhaps the unintentional ambiguity in its text also caught his fascination.
