Normally I don’t enjoy movies, especially modern ones, but the rave reviews from critics and fans made me morbidly curious.
First off, I did not like the DEI hire for Megatron. He sounded like a ghetto thug from the hood, not a threatening leader from his original incarnations.
The first half of the film was kind of generic Marvel slop. Megatron and Optimus are slaves to the ruling class and believe they are destined for greater things, they try to achieve something to gain fame but fail dramatically. You know, the usual superhero origin crap.
They get a heckin wacky sidekick that makes one-liners and repeats the same joke 10 times in a desperate attempt to make the audience laugh. When the only thing that was making me laugh was how shit the film was. We also get our token girlboss character that acts like a spoiled bitch towards the male cast.
But then we enter the second act. The jokes occur less as the film takes a darker tone. We see Megatrans slowly lose himself once he finds out his entire life was a lie made up by the elite. We get some proper action and fanservice from older series. And in the climax we get characters getting ripped in half and beheaded. All culminating into a final fight between Optimus and Megatron, ending in Megatron’s defeat and exile from civilization.
I’d say the best parts of the film were the animation and music. Some of the fights and environments were genuinely cool to look at. And the voice acting was usually serviceable. I just think they could’ve done Megatron’s turn to evil a little bit better as it felt way too rushed as he literally did nothing wrong besides killing the corrupt dictator. If they make a sequel I’ll definitely watch it. Except they won’t because the film bombed hard in the box office, JFL.
