Thoughts? I think it's bullshit. It's the theory that most Jewish people today are actually Turks LARPing as ancient Israelites.
The theory started in 943 when Jews from the Eastern Roman Empire fled from persecution into Khazaria. The King of Khazaria at the time, who was Jewish, subsequently cut ties with the Eastern Roman Empire. Many prominent Khazar leaders converted to Judaism during the 8th century, so therefore modern Ashkenazic Jews are actually Khazars pretending to be Jews. The Khazar Khaganate also served as a buffer state between the West (Byzantium) and the East (the Caliphates), so they likely absorbed even more Jewish refugees fleeing from the two sides.
This seems like a product of the intense antisemitism which was rampant throughout history, but what do you think?
