What a fascinating film. I watched it tonight with my father. That freaking scene where Clean (the Black teenager) bleeds to death on the boat while his mother's voice message plays on his tape recorder about how they're going to celebrate his arrival back home is simply masterful in its emotional power. There's also the detail of how the puppy disappears on the boat during the ambush that really adds to it, as if to say that all of the joys they were able to scrounge in the midst of their depressive slaughter-filled days have left them now that they've seen mortality strike them in the same way that they've been inflicting it upon the Orientals.
