Not denying that plays a factor, but it's more about their shitty work culture that kills and declining birth rate. And don't get me started on all the young folks retreating from society, living in their rooms, playing video games, or watching anime. All living like they've given up on real life.
You know they haven't had an emperor since the 80s.

Literally doesn't matter. The emperor denied his own divinity after Japan fell to the USA which is a denial of Shintoism itself. Shinto today basically doesn't exist in its real form. It's a castrated version of it at best. Not that I care too much but I would have preferred a Japan with a real religion over a Japan that believes in nothing.
